First Annual Read-a-thon: Huge Success for SB Community Library

More than 75 people attended the SB Library’s first annual Read-a-thon on Sunday, February 5.

The Library collaborated with mentoring agency Everybody Wins! to offer an afternoon of reading aloud, music and prizes. Library director Jennifer Murray commented, “It was exciting to have readers in every corner of the Library, from elementary-aged kids sharing books with each other, to little ones being read to.”

Hundreds of books were available in categories at “islands”, where children picked out books to read to each other or their families. Children accumulated gold coins for each book read, making them eligible for prizes in the end-of-day drawing.

Participants also had photo ops with Lake Monsters’ Champ. While refreshments were served, VT singer-songwriter Jon Gailmor enthralled kids and their families with funny songs and tales. Everybody Wins! ended the day by giving each child a free book to take home.

Everbody Wins! director Beth Wallace, explained, “Everybody Wins! Vermont brings volunteer adults and children together in schools across the state to read. Each adult mentor reads with the same child over lunch once a week for the entire school year, and often for several years in a row. Four Chittenden County schools host Everybody Wins! sites.”

The event was sponsored by FairPoint Communications and supported by Phoenix Books, Mirabelle’s Cafe & Bakery, Barnes & Noble, GE Healthcare and SB Recreation and Parks.

Everybody Wins! holds a similar event in Montpelier is now in its 12th year and draws 150-200 people each year.
